Jesus speaks many times in the scriptures about farmers and sowing. For this post, title scripture is Matthew chapter 13. From the scripture quote below, we see that Jesus gave the parable first in verse 8 and then explains it in verse 23. For the sake of time and length, we are covering “Good Soil”.
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
Matthew 13 King James Version (KJV)
If we carefully read verse 8, we will notice the word “into”. From the previous scriptures leading up to verse 8, we see a difference. He used the word “by, upon, among”. We should find that very interesting because we know that most seed has to be covered in order to grow. Generally speaking, a seed not only has to be covered but the seed also has to get proper nutrients from the ground to sprout and bud. Let’s say a person plants a mango seed. The mango seed has a shell around it that the mango flesh is attached to. Most farmers prep the seed before planting. They remove the casing from the seed, so the likely hood of sprouting and budding is increased.
*Side Note* My family comes from the islands and we plant many fruits. One of the most favorite are mangoes.
The seed in scripture quote above is the word of God. And according to John chapter 1, the word is Jesus. I know I said a lot in that one sentence. So, let’s go over it again. The “seed” is synonymous with the “word” which is synonymous with Jesus. Jesus is the seed and the word. I believe it is safe to say that a person can not come to the revelation that Jesus is God without a seed being sown into them. With out a seed fruits and growth can not happen.
Getting back to the mango tree. The seed is removed from its shell casing and prepped for planting. Now we have taken all of that care in prepping the seed. We are not going to take the seed and throw it anywhere. We carefully look for soil with the proper consistency and light for the mango tree. Since mango trees are tropical, it needs a good amount of light. From scripture, Jesus is the seed. Jesus had to be prepped by God The Father before he was used for ministry.
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

Remember, Jesus is the seed. God had to prep Jesus Christ before he could be planted (full ministry) lead by the Holy Spirit. Now we know that the seed that is being planted is good because Jesus is the seed. From what I said about planting a mango tree, we see that the condition that the seed is planted in affects growth and productivity. So, what about the soil?
What is good soil (naturally speaking)?
Soil health (also referred to as soil quality) can then be defined as “the capacity of a soil to function within ecosystems and land use applications that can sustain productivity, maintain environmental quality and promote plant and animal health.” Characteristics of healthy soil include:
• Good soil tilth
CountrySide Daily Dec. 2018
• Sufficient depth
• Proper levels of nutrients
• Good drainage
• Large populations of beneficial organisms
• Resistance to weeds and degradation
• Resilient when unfavorable conditions occur
So let’s break down some of the above list according to the word of God. The list above is talking about natural soil. We are going to reveal it spiritually. From Matthew 13:23, a person is good soil when they not only hear the word (Jesus), but also receives it (him). Not only receives it (him), but also understands and produces fruit (results). Has the soil (person) been broken up to prepare for sowing (softened heart). Hosea 10:12; Jeremiah 4:3. Once the seed is sown in a person, and we see that it is good soil, we should expect fruit. Satan does not want to loose people from the kingdom of darkness. The person that the seed has been sowed into has to cultivate the seed. The person( We) have to meditate on the seed(word/Jesus) day and night. Joshua 1:8; Psalms 1:2.
When the soil is good, it will be able to weather the storm( tests/ trials/ persecutions etc). The soil will also be able resist weeds and the sort( Satan). Harsh weather can and will beat against the soil, but it should NOT uproot or damage the seed that was planted. That is why it is very important to keep speaking the word of God over and over again. There will we hard times, but good soil is able to stand against it.
Yes, sometimes you will feel like throwing in the towel. And sometimes you might fall, but the good news is, you can and should get back up every time. Remember, all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8: 28
God has our back. He will never leave us nor forsake us. Hebrews 13:5
The only way we will be able to stand as “Good Soil/ Ground” is with Jesus Christ. We can not try and do it alone. We have all been through some terrible things in our lives. Our hope is in Jesus Christ( perfect seed).
