Isaiah 58
Many times we fast and not understand what we are doing. Fasting is meant to crucify the flesh. We ask God to reveal to us what we need to change about ourselves. Some of us like to fast and pray about other people. There is nothing wrong with praying and fasting for others, but lets add ourselves. We are made perfect through Jesus Christ, who is our atonement covering. When we fast lets not only look at others weakness but also our own.
Isaiah 58:4 (NLT). “4 What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me.”
If we are fasting, there should be change manifestations in our lives.
Isaiah 58:6-10 (NLT).”No, the kind of fasting I want calls you to free those who are wrongly imprisoned and to stop oppressing those who work for you. Treat them fairly and give them what they earn. 7 I want you to share your food with the hungry and to welcome poor wanderers into your homes. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.” 8 “If you do these things, your salvation will come like the dawn. Yes, your healing will come quickly. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind. 9 Then when you call, the LORD will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply. “Stop oppressing the helpless and stop making false accusations and spreading vicious rumors! 10 Feed the hungry and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as day.
Wow. verses 6-10, also lets us know to stop being selfish and only thinking of ourselves. Once we have prayed and asked God to help us with our shortcomings; we are to follow up with action. We are to help others the way God has helped us. Maybe we have money but God has delivered us from alcoholism. Our deliverance is a testimony to someone else struggling with the same issue. If God has delivered us from whoredom. Help someone else, who desires it, with brotherly love. Many times we want things from God but are not willing to give (sow) into others lives.
The scriptures read in John 1:8-9(NLT),” 8 John himself was not the light; he was only a witness to the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was going to come into the world.”
The light (Jesus Christ) who witness to our spirit, should be shared others.
Our challenge is to fast with a purpose. Be purposeful!
