Chastise, Yes or No?

punishmentWe’ve noticed that many parents are letting their kids get away with a lot of things. Many kids today are losing respect for others and they think that it is amusing. Women, children need to be trained up properly and it takes love, patience and consistency. Many times, we as Christians, allow our kids to behave the way the world behaves or how the world says it’s acceptable to behave. Remember the bible states in Romans 12:2 (KJV),”2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

So the question is; chastisement, is it biblical? Can we or should we punish our children for not obeying our rules?

Hebrews 12:5-11 (KJV).”5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

The verses from the book of Hebrews 12:5-11 are talking about how the Lord chastises us as his children. If we are chastised then we a sons of God and he loves us, but if we are not, we are bastards( illegitimate). Chastisement is not meant to be fun. To elaborate…chastisement is not sending your child to their room where they have a T.V to freely watch. A game center of any kind to play while on punishment, or a smart phone to “tweet” or “kick”. Lets see if there is more in the bible.

Proverbs 13:24 (KJV).”24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

i.e… don’t let it slide, punish them early.

Proverbs 22:15 (KJV).” Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. “

i.e…Children naturally think of foolish things to do.

Proverbs 23:13-15 (KJV).” Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.”

i.e… don’t let it slide. A couple taps on the bottom or in the palm of the hand; will not kill them.

The verses listed above are so straight forward and precise. Yes, we are to punish our kids if we love them. Yes, we are to correct them early on in life. Yes, God is all for corporal punishment. Sometimes children get besides themselves and we as loving responsible parents need to correct them. The key is to punish and chastise kids in love and not in frustration or hate. The bible is so precise with telling us; if we don’t chastise our kids like how God chastises his children… we hate them. We can try and justify our actions, by letting our kids insult us. There is no justification in God’s eyes. We hate our kids. In Proverbs 23:15. It tells us our kids will put us to shame, if we do not punish them.

Proverbs 22:6 (KJV).”6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
